Orphan Sponsorship Scheme

Orphan Sponsorship Scheme

In 2005, AYELU started an Orphan Sponsorship Scheme. The scheme runs in Addis Ababa where thousands of orphans roam the streets with little or no food, not to mention basic health care and education.

By sponsoring an orphan you can make a significant difference in his/her quality of life, and that of his/her family. You will be supporting a widowed mother, or a family member who took the responsibility of that orphan. You will be giving a child a chance to live a life that we take for granted, where food, shelter and education are not a struggle.

Through AYELU’s Orphan Sponsorship Scheme, we ensure that:

[] The sponsored child receives the basic education provided locally.
[] Food and shelter for the orphan’s guardian or family are provided.
[] The child’s progress is closely monitored by our field team who make monthly visits to the sponsored child.
[] Any concerns about the child’s health are dealt with immediately.
[] Sponsors are kept updated by an annual report on their sponsored orphan.

How much does Orphan Sponsorship cost?

[] Orphan Sponsorship costs £264 a year.
[] The amount may be paid in full at the beginning of each 12 month period, or by monthly instalments of £22.00 paid directly into AYELU’s bank account.
[] 7.6% of that amount covers administrative costs in UK and Ethiopia. The remaining amount goes directly to the orphan’s family on a monthly basis.

How to sponsor an orphan?

[] Fill in a Donation Form and send it to us with your details and your preferred method of payment.
[] If making a one off payment of £264, you can send a cheque or transfer the amount to AYELU’s bank account.
[] If paying by instalments, set up a standing order of £22.00 a month to AYELU’s bank account.
[] Upon receipt of the Donation Form and payment, Ayelu will send you an acknowledgment letter with the orphans details.
[] Before the end of the 12 month period, you will be sent an Annual Progress Report on your sponsored child, and a reminder to renew the sponsorship for the following 12 months.

How long does Orphan Sponsorship last?

[] We hope that donors would continue to sponsor the orphans until they are 18 years of age.
[] If this is not possible, we ask donors to continue with their sponsorship for at least two year.
[] Should sponsors wish to end their sponsorship, we ask them to give us a three month notice to find an alternative sponsor.

Orphans General Fund

Orphans General Fund

In addition to the Orphan Sponsorship Scheme, AYELU has an Orphans General Fund which is used in medical check ups and emergencies, and in special occasions such as festivities, or at the beginning of a new academic year when children need clothes, books and stationary.

If you would like to support an orphan and cannot afford the sponsorship costs, you can always donate to the Orphans General Fund. Your donation, however small, will be valued by every orphan.

Food Gift

Food Gift Box

According to the United Nations’ World Food Programme, there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Yet, malnutrition and hunger still afflict one out of every seven people on earth.

Ethiopia is described by the WFP as a hunger spot where 46% of the population are undernourished. In most cases, poverty is the main cause of hunger where people do not have the money to buy food.

AYELU’s ultimate aim is to reduce poverty by helping poor Ethiopians find and hold jobs, and training them for jobs where they can make money, not only to buy food, but to improve their basic quality of lives, where food, water, medical care and education are provided. Although emergency food relief only helps in the now and then, it is detrimental during the drought season. It saves precious lives and has to be prioritized.

AYELU’s Food Relief Programme ensures eligible families receive a monthly Food Gift Box, that helps alleviate, if only partly, the struggle these families have to face on a daily basis to provide for their children.

The Food Gift Boxes will be distributed among families in the Awash area where the drought has already struck hard. Every month our team will visit these households with the Food Boxes that comprise 5 kg rice, 5 kg flour, 5 kg pasta, 3 L oil and 5 kg sugar.

A Food Gift Box costs £15/month. You can choose to donate one Food Gift Box or maximise it by making a monthly donation to help support a family that lost its livelihood during the severe drought season. Please, donate generously to help feed the poor and needy.
